Analysis of how undead are used within game design as mechanical tools and narrative drivers. This includes their role in teaching rules, managing difficulty, shaping player behavior, and supporting progression across genres.
Study of how undead function within stories across film, literature, and interactive media. Here, the focus is on how undeath carries unresolved history, symbolism, and narrative weight rather than serving as spectacle or generic monster.
Why Study the Undead
Undead appear in nearly every culture and era because they solve a problem stories cannot ignore. Death ends life, but it does not end meaning. Undead allow that meaning to persist.
Across myth, folklore, games, and modern media, undead carry what remains unresolved. They hold memory, obligation, guilt, power, and history after life has ended. They represent what cannot rest, whether through grief, injustice, curse, or control. Their presence marks places where closure failed.
In games and interactive media, undead serve a practical purpose. They allow death to exist without finality. Designers use undead to introduce systems, structure conflict, and manage player progression without the ethical weight attached to killing the living. This makes undead reliable tools in games rather than arbitrary enemies.
Studying undead is a way of studying how people relate to mortality. What we raise, what we bind, and what we refuse to let rest reveals how we understand fear, control, responsibility, and legacy.
Undead Lore exists to examine these patterns. It looks at how and why undead are used, what roles they fulfill, and what their persistence reveals about how people understand death, power, and responsibility.
Death defines us while undeath tells the story of what we do with that definition.
